As the nation commemorates the 13th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks this week amid increasing threats from terrorist groups abroad, the Clements Center for History, Strategy and Statecraft and the Strauss Center for International Security and Law at The University of Texas at Austin will host a first-of-its-kind conference featuring America’s most senior intelligence and counterterrorism leaders.

On Monday, August 11, the Clements Center opened the doors to Harbin Hall, the Center’s revitalized office space in the Flawn Academic Center named in honor of dear friend and supporter Jack Harbin.

I spent the summer at the House Armed Services committee responsible for the authorization and oversight of the Department of Defense (DoD) and US military activities.

This summer, Clements Center Undergraduate Fellows Mark Jbeily ‘15 and Aro Han ’15 attended an Advanced Institute with the Hertog Political Studies Program entitled “Lessons of the Iraq War.”

When I first arrived at the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA), I was told that the office expected its interns to take initiative regarding research interests and availability. With such a foundation set, I wasted no time in offering to help where needed.

Austin, Texas – The William P. Clements, Jr. Center for History, Strategy & Statecraft at The University of Texas at Austin has named Paul D. Miller as associate director.

“This summer I had the opportunity to intern for the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs at the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C. Working within the Public Diplomacy Office I was involved mainly with the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI), a presidential initiative that aims to promote cooperation and solidarity among youth living in the ten ASEAN countries.

The William P. Clements, Jr. Center for History Strategy & Statecraft at The University of Texas at Austin announces the members of its Statecraft Board of Reference.

Two Postdoctoral Fellows have been selected to join the Clements Center team for the 2014-2015 academic year. 

In April, the Clements Center partnered with the Marine Corps Command and Staff College in Quantico, Virginia for a major policy exercise on security challenges in SouthEast Asia.  Over 350 military officers and civilian policymakers participated in the two week simulation, titled “Exercise Nine Innings.” 

UT’s Longhorn Network featured the Clements Center on their “Campus Minute” broadcast on April 17th. The Center made headlines the previous day when it welcomed U.S. Senator Marco Rubio to the Blanton Museum Auditorium.

The Clements Center is seeking applications for its Undergraduate Fellows Programs. The due date has been extended to Tuesday, April 22nd!

It is with heavy hearts that we learned the news that Ambassador Robert S. Strauss has passed away. William Inboden, Clements Center Executive Director and Distinguished Scholar at the Strauss Center, said: “With the death of Ambassador Strauss, we have lost a great Longhorn, a great Texan, and a great American.”  

The German Marshall Fund of the United States launched the Emerging Powers Policy Forum in 2013 in which the Clements Center’s Executive Director William Inboden took part and authored a chapter titled “Global Security Challenges Confronting Established and Emerging Powers.”

The Clements Center received 50 applications for its first annual Summer Seminar in History and Statecraft in Beaver Creek, CO and from that group selected the following 17 participants:

On Monday, March 3, the Clements Center for History, Strategy & Statecraft and the Strauss Center for International Security and Law welcomed author Tom Ricks to give a talk on his book entitled, The Generals: American Military Command from WWII to Today.

Mark Lawrence, Clements Center Director of Graduate Studies, published The Vietnam War: An International History in Documents (Oxford University Press) on February 28, 2014.

Clements Center Senior Fellow Frank Gavin and Director of Graduate Studies Mark A. Lawrence are co-editors of a newly published volume, Beyond the Cold War: Lyndon Johnson and the New Global Challenges of the 1960s (Oxford University Press, January 2014).

Former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger spoke about Bill Clements in a video prepared for the Clements Center’s inaugural gala on November 21, 2013.

The Clements Center for History, Strategy and Statecraft hosted its inaugural gala on November 21st, 2013 at the University of Texas. Over 300 friends and guests attended the event to commemorate the launch of the historic center.

The Clements Center, in partnership with King’s College London, convened its first conference in early-November at the University of Texas at Austin.  Participants from all over the U.S. and U.K. attended the event titled “Diplomacy, Alliances and War: Anglo-American Perspectives on History and Strategy in the September 11th Era.”  

Clements Center Post-Doctoral Fellow Steele Brand will offer an undergraduate course in Spring 2014 through UT’s Department of History.

In September, Clements Center Director Will Inboden and incoming Strauss Center Director Bobby Chesney led a team of scholars in a workshop involving a number of senior officials from the National Security Agency at the agency’s headquarters in Ft. Meade, Maryland.

This year, the University of Texas at Austin announced the establishment of the William P. Clements Jr. Center for History, Strategy and Statecraft. The Center honors the legacy of former Texas Governor Bill Clements, who served as Deputy Secretary of Defense from 1973-1977.

The Clements Center is hosting an upcoming lecture series “Strategic Insights from the Ancient World,” to be held during the 2013-14 academic year.

The Clements Center co-sponsored a symposium on Friday, September 6th titled “Troubled Waters: East Asia’s Contemporary Territorial Disputes” in the Avaya Auditorium at UT.

The Clements Center’s Executive Director William Inboden appeared on Good Day Austin to discuss the President’s response to the conflict in Syria.

The Graduate Fellows Program, spearheaded by the Clements Center’s Director of Graduate Studies Mark Lawrence, is designed to support distinguished doctoral students enrolled in the UT history department, government department, and LBJ School.
