Summer Beyond Borders: The Vietnam Wars

2027 Program Dates: May 23 – June 8

Students will spend a fast-paced, educational two weeks exploring the rich history and geopolitical dynamics of Vietnam. Much of the program will introduce students to Vietnam through a historical lens, starting with the colonial legacies that can still be seen in Vietnam’s architecture, cuisine, language. We’ll also examine the impact of the Second World War and final defeat of French colonialism in the 1950s before turning our attention to the war fought by the United States in the 1960s and 1970s.

Lectures, discussions, and site visits will delve into a complex and controversial history that left deep scars on Vietnam—and Southeast Asia more generally—as well as on the United States. Important questions include the following: How did the Vietnamese struggle for independence become entangled in the Cold War? Why did U.S. leaders believe the defense of South Vietnam was worth a massive expenditure of American lives and resources? Why did the communists prevail? What social, political, and cultural impacts did the war leave on Vietnam, the United States, and the rest of the world?

The program will also consider Vietnam’s geopolitical position in the contemporary world order. We’ll consider how the country emerged as an economic powerhouse and how it, like other nations of Southeast Asia, manages its diplomatic and economic relations with China, the United States, and other nations.

All of this will play out against the backdrop of a complicated, vibrant, rapidly changing, and welcoming society. From Ho Chi Minh City in the south to Hanoi in the north, we will explore historical and cultural sites, meet with local experts, and discover the natural beauty of a country that is simultaneously rooted in a difficulty history and evolving into a dynamic force in one of the world’s most consequential regions.
