LBJ School faculty awarded prestigious appointments for expertise in national security

On January 27, 2025, the LBJ School of Public Affairs proudly celebrated several new faculty recipients of prestigious chair and professorship titles, honoring their exceptional contributions to public policy research, teaching, and leadership. Among those recognized were Vice Admiral Joe Maguire, Executive Director of the Clements Center, and James “Paul” Pope, Senior Fellow of the Intelligence Studies Project.

Vice Admiral Maguire holds the Sid Richardson Visiting Chair at the LBJ School of Public Affairs, where, as a Professor of Practice, he teaches courses on national security, intelligence, leadership, and ethics to master’s students studying public affairs and global policy. This fall and spring, he taught “Special Operations: Raids, Rescues, and Relationships” at the Clements Center.

Paul Pope was appointed the Lloyd Hackler Chair in Ethical Leadership. The Hackler Chair has been vacant since 2019 following the retirement of LBJ Senior Lecturer BGEN (Ret.) Dr. Howard Prince. In his remarks, LBJ School Dean JR DeShazo recognized Professor Pope’s exceptional leadership and contributions to the School’s national security program, including teaching, mentoring, and curriculum development in this growth area. ISP Director Steve Slick congratulated Pope for his “extraordinary record of high-integrity leadership with over 50 years of public service as an Army officer, intelligence officer, and educator both within the CIA and at The University of Texas.” This spring semester, Professor Pope is leading PA325 “Intelligence and National Security,” and during the Fall 2024 semester, Pope led graduate-level seminars in “Intelligence and National Security” and “Thinking, Writing, and Briefing for National Security.”
