Clements Center concludes tenth annual “Summer Seminar in History and Statecraft”

For the past ten years, the Clements Center has proudly hosted its annual Summer Seminar in History and Statecraft, selecting advanced doctoral students for a week of learning, discussion and networking.  

This year’s highly selective program brought together twenty-one students from premier universities in the U.S. and abroad including Yale, John Hopkins, Georgetown, Princeton, Purdue, Chicago, Columbia, University of Cambridge, American University, Tufts, Weseda, the University of Texas, for a weeklong seminar in Beaver Creek, CO. 

Seminar participants discussed the relationship between history and policy with distinguished policymakers and academics, including Jim Goldgeier, Meg Reiss, Stephen Kotkin, Susan Colbourn, Simon Miles, Elizabeth Charles, Philip Zelikow, Thomas Jamison, Charlie Edel, Ryan Evans, Rick Landgraf, Marshall Kosloff, Dirk Ringgenberg, and Tanvi Madan. Several University of Texas faculty also attended, including the Intelligence Studies Project’s Steve Slick, Clements Center Director of Research Aaron O’Connell, Asia Policy Program’s Sheena Chestnut Greitens, and our own Executive Director Joe Maguire and Associate Director Paul Edgar.  

Students participated in seminars such as “Evaluating NATO Enlargement: From Cold War Victory to the Russia-Ukraine War,” “American National Security Strategy in the Indo-Pacific,” and “AUKUS as Geopolitical Detail, Hope, Harbinger, and Bet.” They also enjoyed the natural beauty of the area with hikes and other activities in Beaver Creek.
