The Intelligence Studies Project of The University of Texas at Austin announces the 8th annual competition recognizing outstanding student research and writing on topics related to intelligence and national security. The winner of the “Inman Award” will receive a cash prize of $5,000, with two semifinalists each receiving a cash prize of $2,500. This competition is open to unpublished work by undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in degree programs at accredited U.S. higher education institutions during the 2021-22 academic year. The deadline for submitting papers is June 30, 2022.

Undergraduate Fellows visit the LBJ Ranch

We kicked off the Spring 2022 semester with a trip to the LBJ Ranch with our Undergraduate Fellows. Lynne Hudson, a retired Army nurse who served in Vietnam from 1967-1968, spoke to the group about her experience in the field, and former Clements Center Predoctoral Fellow Theo Milonopoulos led the students through a policy simulation exercise. Our Fellows also went on a tour of the ranch, stopping at the Junction School, the cemetery, the show barn and the Texas White House where President Johnson made important policy decisions during his presidency.

The LBJ School is home to 12 faculty conducting research on all aspects of national security and intelligence. Their faculty support the Robert S. Strauss Center for International Security and Law, the Clements Center for National Security, the Intelligence Studies Project, the Nuclear Proliferation Prevention Project, and the newly launched Asia Policy Program.

Robert Divine: 1929-2021

The Department of History lost one of its true giants last Wednesday when Robert Divine, a preeminent scholar of U.S. foreign relations, passed away at the age of 92. Bob taught at UT for a remarkable 42 years before retiring in 1996. Along the way, he published 14 books, racked up numerous teaching awards, served as department chair, and advised numerous PhD students who went on to distinguished careers. Bob touched innumerable lives – including ours — and is remembered for generosity and good cheer as well as his scholarly brilliance.

The Clements Center mourns the death of Colin Powell.  He is the only person in history to have served in all three roles of National Security Advisor, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, and Secretary of State, and he was the first black American to hold each position. Above all, he was an American patriot.

Applications are open now through Friday, November 26, 2021 at 11:00 pm Central for the “London Maymester: The U.S., U.K., and World Order.” In partnership with the world-renowned War Studies Department at King’s College London, the Maymester in London provides exemplary students the opportunity to learn firsthand about the U.S./U.K. special relationship. The program is taught at King’s College London and includes visits to important landmarks in British cultural heritage and Anglo-American strategic history, as well as private events with senior policymakers and historians.

Announcing Class of 2021-22 Doctoral and Military Fellows

The Clements Center for National Security at the University of Texas at Austin welcomes its 2021-22 class of Doctoral and Military Fellows! Emily Whalen of the University of Texas and Alexandra Sukalo of Stanford University are this year’s postdoctoral fellows. Zoltan Feher of Tufts University and Elena Wicker of Georgetown University are this year’s predoctoral fellows. Lt. Col. Edward Arntson (U.S. Army) and Cdr. Mike Knickerbocker (U.S. Navy) will be our inaugural Military Fellows. William Chou of Ohio State University joins us as a postdoctoral America in the World Consortium fellow, and Joseph Ledford of the University of California, Berkeley joins us as a predoctoral America in the World Consortium fellow. Read below for their respective bios.

The Clements Center for National Security, the Robert Strauss Center for International Security and Law, and the Journal of Law and Technology at Texas, hosted Professor Matthew C. Waxman, the Liviu Librescu Professor of Law at the Columbia Law School for a discussion of Autonomous and Semi-Autonomous Weapons and The U.S.’ Role in Defining the Future of Warfare. Professor Waxman formerly served as a deputy assistant secretary of defense and shortly thereafter as the State Department’s Principal Deputy Director of Policy Planning, leading the U.S. delegation to the United Nations Human Rights Committee in Geneva.

ISP Releases Survey on Public Attitudes on US Intelligence for 2020

The Chicago Council on Global Affairs recently published the results from the fourth round of an annual poll sponsored by the University of Texas at Austin’s Intelligence Studies Project (ISP) that seeks to shed light on Americans’ perceptions of our intelligence agencies. The survey was conducted and reported by ISP Director Steve Slick, Strauss Center Distinguished Scholar Joshua Busby, and Clements Center Undergraduate Fellow Archit Oswal.

The Center for Strategic and International Studies recently released Maintaining the Intelligence Edge: Reimagining and Reinventing Intelligence Through Innovation, the final report of a year-long Task Force convened to study the opportunities and obstacles to integrating emerging technologies into intelligence missions. The Task Force report and a link to the January 14, 2021 (virtual) briefing by the Task Force staff and commissioners is available HERE.
