Clements Center concludes ninth annual “Summer Seminar in History and Statecraft”

The highly selective program brought twenty-two advanced doctoral students from premier universities in the U.S. and abroad, including Johns Hopkins, Harvard, Georgetown, King’s College London, Cambridge, North Carolina, Virginia, Georgia Tech, Boston and Chicago, for a week of learning, discussion and networking. Seminar participants discussed the relationship between history and policy with distinguished policymakers and academics, including Frank Gavin, Jim Goldgeier, Kori Schake, Charlie Edel, Tanvi Madan, Elizabeth Charles, Fred Logevall, Dan Twining, Jim Steinberg, Mike Kershaw, Mark Odom, Alexandra Hall Hall, Philip Zelikow, Bob Zoellick and Ryan Evans. Several faculty from the University of Texas also attended, including the Intelligence Studies Project’s Steve Slick, Asia Policy Program’s Sheena Chestnut Greitens, affiliates Vince Brooks, Bianca Adair and Michele Malvesti, and our own former Executive Director Will Inboden and Interim Executive Director Paul Edgar. Students participated in seminars such as “Evaluating NATO Enlargement: From Cold War Victory to the Russia-Ukraine War “American National Security Strategy in the Indo-Pacific,” and “Emerging Technologies and Future World Order: What Can History Teach Us?.” They also took advantage of the natural beauty of the area with hikes and other activities.
