Thomas Jamison

Dr. Tommy Jamison is an Associate Professor of History at The University of Texas at Austin and an affiliate with the Clements Center for National Security as well as the Asia Policy Program. His work explores naval warfare in the Pacific, with an emphasis on technological shifts and institutional adaptation. He is the author of The Pacific’s New Navies: An Ocean, Its Wars and the Making of U.S. Sea Power (Cambridge, 2025), winner of the Leopold Prize (OAH) and the Lyman Book Award (NASOH).

Additionally, he has published award-winning essays in the Journal of Military History and Technology and Culture, among other journals. In recent years, he has enjoyed a Fulbright Fellowship at the Nobel Institute, in Oslo, Norway, and a Council on Foreign Relations International Affairs Fellowship in the National Institute for Defence Studies in Tokyo, Japan. Prior to arriving in Austin, he taught in the Defense Analysis Department at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA. He is a veteran of the United States Navy, with deployments in the Western Pacific and Afghanistan. He holds a Ph.D. (2020) and MA (2017) in International History from Harvard University, and a B.A. in History from Grinnell College (2009). He lives in Austin with his wife and their two boys.
