Lieutenant Colonel Waylon Tomac
81st Weapons of Mass Destruction-Civil Support Team, Bismarck, ND North Dakota Army National Guard
Lt. Col. Tomac enlisted in the ND Army National Guard in July 2002 with the 957th Multi-Role Bridge Company. He accepted his commission as a Medical Service Corps officer in December 2005 with the ND Medical Detachment as the Occupational Health Manager and Patient Administration Officer. He also served as the Deputy State Surgeon from June 2009 to September 2010. He was hired by the 81st WMD-CST in September 2012 as the Nuclear Medicine Science Officer, and as the Deputy Commander of the 81st WMD-CST from October 2017 to September 2020. Lt. Col.Tomac went on to serve as the 68th Troop Command S3/Training Officer from October 2020 until March 2023.
In April 2023, Lt. Col. Tomac assumed duties as the Deputy State Surgeon and Preventive Medicine Officer in the State Medical Readiness Detachment. Lt. Col. Tomac arrived at his current assignment as the 81st Weapons of Mass Destruction (Civil Support Team) in April 2026. Lt. Col. Tomac has been accepted to the US Army War College Fellowship at The University of Texas at Austin and will begin the program in July 2026.
Lt. Col. Tomac grew up south of Mandan near the town of Saint Anthony. He attended the University of Mary receiving degrees in Respiratory Therapy, Chemistry and Theology, and holds his Master’s degree in Public Health from Des Moines University. He is also a graduate of the US Army’s Command and General Staff College Advanced Operations Course. He maintains licensure as a Registered Respiratory Therapist and Environmental Health Practitioner. He is trained as a Microscopist, HazMat Technician and HazMat Safety Officer.
Lt. Col. Tomac is married to Jamie, and together they have 4 children ages 22, 20, 18, and 14. They run a cattle ranch west of Mandan in their free time where the kids enjoy their horses, bottle calves, dog, and lots of barn cats. His hobbies include playing guitar and mandolin, hunting, skiing, cheering for class B high school sports and spending time with his family.
