David Leal

David L. Leal is Professor of Government, Director of the Irma Rangel Public Policy Institute, and Professor (by courtesy) of Mexican American Studies and Religious Studies. His primary academic interest is Latino politics, and his work explores the political and policy implications of demographic change in the United States. One aspect of his research is the political engagement and public opinions of military veterans, especially Latino veterans.  He has published over fifty journal articles and edited or co-edited a dozen scholarly books and journal symposia. His classes include Latino Politics, Immigration Politics, Politics and Religion, British Politics, and the U.S. Congress. He has been an American Political Science Association Congressional Fellow, a Fulbright Distinguished Lecturer in Japan, and an Associate Member of Nuffield College at Oxford University. Since 2018, he also has been a Senior Fellow of the Hoover Institution at Stanford University.  In 2021, he received the Distinguished Career Award from the Latina/o Caucus of the Midwest Political Science Association.
