Austin Matthews
Austin S. Matthews is an Associate Professor in the Clements Center for National Security at The University of Texas at Austin. His research and teaching cover subjects in political science, history, and regional studies. He is also a Project Manager on the GetGov Project, based at the University of Oslo, which collects data on cabinet ministers worldwide from 1800 to the present.
His work focuses on comparative authoritarianism, civil-military relations, and security studies. Dr. Matthews’ research has been published in academic journals and edited volumes, including the British Journal of Political Science, International Studies Quarterly, and the Journal of Conflict Resolution. His current book manuscript examines how dictatorships embed partisan structures within their armed forces to secure the loyalty of soldiers and officers.
He holds a doctorate from Louisiana State University, a master’s from Texas State University, and a bachelor’s from Schreiner University. Prior to his current appointment, Dr. Matthews was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at East Carolina University.
