Announcing Sheena Chestnut Greitens as the Editor-in-Chief of the Texas National Security Review

The Texas National Security Reviewa joint partnership between War on the Rocks and the University of Texas, is pleased to announce that Sheena Chestnut Greitens, PhD, will become its new editor-in-chief, succeeding Will Inboden, PhD.

Greitens, an award-winning scholar and associate professor at UT Austin’s LBJ School of Public Affairs, brings a wealth of expertise and leadership to the Texas National Security Review. She directs UT’s Asia Policy Program, a joint initiative of the Clements Center for National Security and the Strauss Center for International Security & Law, and is a visiting associate professor of Indo-Pacific security at the U.S. Army War College. Additionally, she is a non-resident scholar at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

Greitens’ research focuses on security in East Asia and authoritarian politics and foreign policy. She is the author of Dictators and their Secret Police: Coercive Institutions and State Violence (Cambridge 2016) and Politics of the North Korean Diaspora (Cambridge 2023). She is currently finishing her third book, which examines how internal security concerns shape Chinese grand strategy. Her work has been published in International SecurityComparative Political Studies, and China Quarterly, as well as in major media outlets like Foreign Affairs and the New York Times. She has also appeared on eight episodes of Horns of a Dilemma, the podcast of the Texas National Security Review.

As editor-in-chief, Greitens will provide high-level leadership and strategic direction for the Texas National Security Review. She will focus on maintaining and enhancing the journal’s quality and reputation as well as identifying emerging trends and critical areas of research that ought to appear in the journal. She will work closely with the DC-based team at War on the Rocks headquarters, including the journal’s publisher, Ryan Evans, as well as the new executive editor, who has yet to be selected. You will also hear Greitens even more on Horns of a Dilemma.

Greitens’ extensive background in both academia and policy, combined with her commitment to high-quality scholarship, positions her uniquely to help lead the Texas National Security Review into its next chapter. Her vision for the journal includes leveraging its platform to create more benefits and connections for students and faculty in Austin and across Texas. 

The Texas National Security Review looks forward to the innovative perspectives and dynamic leadership Professor Greitens will bring to her role as editor-in-chief. Her appointment marks a significant step in the journal’s ongoing mission to generate policy-relevant and policy-accessible knowledge about the world’s toughest challenges.
