Summer Beyond Borders, Baltic Perspectives: History, Geopolitics, and Security in the 20th and 21st Centuries
2026 Program Dates: June 5-19
Students will spend a fast-paced, educational two weeks exploring the rich history, geopolitical dynamics, and security challenges of the Baltics. From Estonia to Lithuania, students will follow the trajectory of the region's 20th-century history and its relationships with Russia, the European Union, the United States, as well as NATO.
Students will gain substantive expertise on the pressing security issues facing the region today and begin to consider potential policy solutions, diplomatic approaches, and strategic frameworks for addressing these challenges. Along the way, students will visit former KGB headquarters and prison cells, Soviet military bases, national archives, and U.S. Embassies, examining how the region's Soviet architectural legacy—from monumental public buildings to residential planning—continues to define urban spaces and civic life. Students will also take a short overnight trip to Narva, where they will explore the city’s Russian-majority population and examine its unique geopolitical context. By engaging with local experts, policymakers, and academics, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the region's past, present, and future opportunities and challenges.
Participation is limited to 12 students. Interested students should complete our online application. Applications will include a CV or resume, statement of purpose, unofficial transcripts, and contact information from UT faculty or staff who are willing to serve as referrals.
