Ian Johnson is an Assistant Professor of Military History at The University of Notre Dame and was previously a 2016–2017 Postdoctoral Fellow at the Clements Center for National Security at The University of Texas at Austin.
Born and raised in Edina, Minnesota, he received his B.A. from Claremont McKenna College in 2009. He then served as a professional cartographer and consultant before beginning his doctoral work at the Ohio State University. He received his MA degree in history there in 2012. He completed his Ph.D. in 2016, with a dissertation that explored secret military cooperation between the Soviet Union and Germany in the interwar period. He is the editor of a book, The White Nights: Pages from a Russian Doctor’s Notebook (Bowen Press Books, March 2018), and author of Faustian Bargain: Secret Soviet-German Military Cooperation in the Interwar Period (Oxford University Press, March 2019).
