A. Wess Mitchell is President of the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA), a U.S. foreign policy institute dedicated to the study of Central and Eastern Europe. A co-founder of CEPA, he has played an active role in its growth into a successful 501(c)(3) policy organization. At CEPA, Mitchell is responsible for the strategic direction of the institute and the development of major programs.
Mitchell is the author of numerous articles and reports on geostrategy and transatlantic security. In his research and writing, he is especially interested in the security dilemmas facing “frontline” U.S. allies between the Baltic and Black Seas and in other frontier regions. His commentaries have appeared in The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, International Herald Tribune, Washington Post, BBC, Harper’s Weekly, American Interest, National Interest, Orbis and many others.
During the 2012 U.S. Presidential elections, Mitchell served on the National Security Transition Team for the Mitt Romney presidential campaign. He currently serves as the Chair of the Europe Working Group for the John Hay Initiative, a foreign-policy assessment group. He is also a member of the advisory council of the Brzezinski Institute for Geostrategy, the Richard G. Lugar Center for Diplomacy, the Slovak Atlantic Commission, the Prague Center for Transatlantic Relations and others.
Mitchell holds a Master’s Degree from Georgetown University’s Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, where he was awarded the 2004 Hopper Award. He is the co-author of two books on geopolitics and is currently completing a third.
