She found that since ISIS declared its intent to “expand in Bengal,” eight ‘affiliated’ attacks have occurred in Bangladesh. Kaiser-Cross writes that the spread of ISIS ideology to South Asia will likely result in increased attacks. She credits the “government’s success in attacking local terror networks” with “unintentionally enabl[ing] ISIS ideology to gain momentum” in Bangladesh. “Local disenfranchised organizations like Jamaat-e-Islami, Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen, and Ansar-al-Islam are beginning to take advantage of the benefits of allying with ISIS, including the potential expansion of foreign funding,” according to Kaiser-Cross.
