Aug 08, 2022

The highly selective program brought twenty advanced doctoral students from premier universities in the U.S. and abroad, including the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Princeton, Cornell, Brown, American University, the University of Pennsylvania, and King’s College London, for a week of learning, discussion and networking. Seminar participants discussed the relationship between history and policy with distinguished policymakers and academics, including Frank Gavin, Jim Goldgeier, Kori Schake, Charlie Edel, Tanvi Madan, Elizabeth Charles, Dan Twining, Jim Steinberg, Dirk Ringgenberg, Alexandra Hall Hall, Philip Zelikow and Ryan Evans. Several faculty from the University of Texas also attended, including Rosella Cappella Zielinski, Aaron O’Connell, the Intelligence Studies Project’s Steve Slick and J. Paul Pope, the Texas National Security Review’s Doyle Hodges and Megan Oprea, and our own Executing Director Will Inboden and Associate Director Paul Edgar. Students participated in seminars such as “Thinking Historically – A Guide to Statecraft and Strategy,” “What Really Happened with NATO Expansion and What it Means for U.S.-Russia Relations Today,” and “History on the Battlefield.” They also took advantage of the natural beauty of the area with hikes and other activities.
