Hunting Nukes: A Fifty-Year Pursuit of Atomic Bomb Builders and Mischief Makers

On Tuesday, November 28, the Clements Center for National Security and the Alexander Hamilton Society at UT-Austin hosted Richard Lawless, former Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs, for a book talk on his recent release Hunting Nukes: A Fifty-Year Pursuit of Atomic Bomb Builders and Mischief Makers.

Richard Phillip Lawless served in Asia with U.S. Army counterintelligence from 1967 to 1970 then joined the Central Intelligence Agency in 1972, serving in the Directorate of Operations for 15 years. Posted in Seoul, Vienna, Tokyo and Washington, he completed his CIA career as a special project manager for Director William Casey. In 2002 in the wake of 9/11, Lawless returned to U.S. government service within the policy component of the Department of Defense, serving as the Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs. During that period, he also served as the deputy head of the U.S. delegation to the Beijing Six-Party Talks, which dealt with the North Korean nuclear issue. He resides with his wife Mimi in Northern Virginia, where he remains active in national security consulting and technology.
