Clements Center Co-sponsors Conference on East Asian Territorial Disputes

Sep 06, 2013

The event aimed to address several key questions such as: What are the long-term implications for both the security and prosperity of East Asia and for American foreign policy toward the region? What do the conflicts over the DoktoTakeshima and the Senkaku/Diaoyu islands reveal about the shifting nationalisms, politics and economics of Japan, China and South Korea? The symposium began with panel remarks from top experts in the field: Tom Christensen, Professor at Princeton University and former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs; Kevin Doak, a Professor in Georgetown’s Department of East Asian Languages and Culture; Alexis Dudden, Professor at the University of Connecticut; and Sheila Smith, Senior Fellow for Japan studies at the Council on Foreign Relations. After their remarks, the Clements Center’s Executive Director William Inboden and Professor Jeremi Suri with the LBJ School and History Department provided comments and opened the floor to audience questions.
