Director of Graduate Studies Mark Lawrence publishes article in the New York Times

Lawrence examines former U.S. President Lyndon Johnson’s statement  “that by seeing this struggle through now, we are greatly reducing the chances of a much larger war — perhaps a nuclear war,” which he declared in a 1967 address to the nation in an attempt to bolster public support for the Vietnam War.  While Johnson’s words “conveyed confidence, even passion” about the war, Lawrence questions whether the former president was correct in his “dire assessment of the stakes in Vietnam.”
