Professional Development Workshop: Networking and Mentorship

At the workshop, these distinguished panelists offered insights and tips from their combined 65 plus years of experience in public service to talk to student about how to network, the etiquette of networking, and how to develop strong relations with a professional mentor. This workshop was designed for undergraduate and graduate students interested in careers in public service in the federal government, intelligence community, military, and large-scale international organizations.

Dr. Paul D. Miller is the associate director of the Clements Center for National Security at The University of Texas at Austin. He is a distinguished scholar with the Strauss Center for International Security and Law, an affiliated faculty member with the Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies, and a lecturer at the LBJ School of Public Affairs. As a practitioner, Dr. Miller served as Director for Afghanistan and Pakistan on the National Security Council staff; worked as an intelligence analyst for the Central Intelligence Agency; and served as a military intelligence officer in the U.S. Army, including a deployment to Afghanistan. His most recent book, American Power and Liberal Order: A Conservative Internationalist Grand Strategy, was published by Georgetown University Press in 2016.

Stephen B. Slick is the inaugural Director of the Intelligence Studies Project. He retired in 2014 after 28 years as a member of CIA’s clandestine service. Between 2005 and 2009, Steve served as a special assistant to the president and the Senior Director for Intelligence Programs and Reform on the staff of the National Security Council. He was previously the Director for Intelligence Programs at the NSC. While serving at the White House, Steve participated in efforts to restructure and reform the intelligence community informed by recommendations of the commissions charged with investigating the 9/11 attacks and the flawed pre-war analysis of Iraq’s unconventional weapons programs. 

Lieutenant Commander Michael Sarraille was born and raised in Palo Alto, CA. He was enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1998, eventually transferring to the Navy as an officer and Navy SEAL. While assigned to SEAL Team THREE he participated as a ground force commander in the Battle of Ramadi and Battle of Sadr City, Iraq. In 2015, LCDR Sarraille was assigned to the University of Texas at Austin Navy ROTC Unit as a professional education instructor. During his tenure, LCDR Sarraille completed the full-time MBA program at the UT McCombs School of Business in 2017. Additionally, LCDR Sarraille is the founder of VETTED, a Texas based Veteran Service Organization. VETTED is the optimal veteran transition platform to transform proven military leaders into tomorrow’s industry leaders and entrepreneurs.
