Associate Director quoted in Politico article

Mark Perry | Oct 27, 2016

In “Afghanistan 15 Years On: Obama’s Sorriest Legacy,” Perry discusses the 15-year evolution of United States involvement in the war in Afghanistan, and highlights a widely held opinion among experts that a key to long-term stabilization of Afghanistan involves pushing the Afghan government to solve its own problems, rather than to rely on NATO and ISAF troops to do so in their stead.

Miller contributes his view that that process will “take time,” and that addressing the current state of instability would require a greater commitment from Congress and the commander-in-chief of the United States military–whoever that might be. Miller’s contribution to Perry’s piece also includes an assessment of when the war in Afghanistan began to go badly for the United States, and why, writing that “Resources don’t guarantee victory, but their absence can guarantee defeat. Afghanistan was always under-resourced.”
