Clements Center Mourns Passing of Jack Harbin

Jul 28, 2014

“We are deeply saddened at the passing of Jack Harbin,” Clements Center Executive Director William Inboden said. “In his death we have lost a great American, a great Texan, and a faithful and generous friend to The University of Texas and the Clements Center. Jack Harbin will be greatly missed, but his memory will live on through his loving family, his many friends, and his abundant philanthropy. Here at the Clements Center, as we begin to carry out our mission within the elegant walls of Harbin Hall, we will strive to be worthy of his legacy.”

On Monday, August 11, the Clements Center will move in to its revitalized office space appropriately named “Harbin Hall” in honor of Mr. Harbin’s generosity and kindness of spirit.

Mr. Harbin received a BBA from The University of Texas in 1939 and later earned the title of Distinguished Alumnus in 1981. He began his career in the energy business as an accountant for Carter Oil Company, served in the United States Navy during World War II, and after the war worked his way up to become CEO and Chairman of Halliburton.

Governor Bill Clements and Jack Harbin were close friends for decades and shared similar life stories. They were avid hunting partners, global pioneers in the oil and gas industry,  devoted supporters of the Boy Scouts of America, and generous benefactors of higher education in Texas.

The Clements Center team offers our condolences and prayers to Jack Harbin’s family at the loss of their beloved father and grandfather.
